The day Cricket was banned in India.

If this article represents any living or dead people or something related to Jallikattu, that's purely coincidental.

It was one of the many lazy afternoons, Apoorva, the US born Indian, also the leading lady of PETS (People for ethical treatment of sportsmen), noticed a video in the suggestion panel in YouTube, with a heading, "Gruesome injuries in Cricket", when she was searching for cute cat videos as she had no other work to do at her boring office. She clicked it and saw some  bouncers bowled at 150ks hitting the helmet, chest and groin of batsman, some acrobatic fielding efforts ended with injury and the player's subsequent pain and struggles , the 1st ranked gruesome injury was Sean Abbot's bouncer onto Phil Hughes' back side of his head which resulted with his sad demise.
Instead of shock, Apoorva's face lit up. Some big idea struck her brain, she had been in a big pressure to prove her US boss that people at PETS' Indian office was doing their job. She watched some other videos on cricket injuries and noted down some words like "lethal delivery", "fatal blow" etc,  out of those she underlined one specific word "Tracer Bullet". When she discussed this with her US boss Sam, he found a potential there to introduce the US sport Baseball into Indian market by banning Cricket. He promised her all the financial and political support she needed.
She sent some of her staff to BCCI and told the officials that they will help the injured players to recover from both their physical and mental injuries. BCCI, without any suspicion, helped them with the data of all their injured players from the early days of cricket and the methods they used for the rehabilitation.
The next day she met her lawyer and typed a 1500 page petition to ban the sport because of the brutalities suffered by the players and presented it in the supreme court as an urgent hearing. The panel of judges who were not part of the cricketing community, and ignorant of the sport, appointed a retired judge to investigate the horrors of the sport.
The man who was reappointed for the  investigation was indeed retired from the duties because they found the age will affect the work, was given 30 days to finish his investigation and file a report. He started to read through the 1500 page petition and convinced himself to ban cricket just after the first 10 pages . He spent rest of the 30 days sleeping and on the last day he asked the honourable judges to give extension of 20 more days to complete the said investigation.
Meanwhile, Apoorva met all the struggling actors of Bollywood, money hungry politicians, and the sidelined former cricketers to propagate against Cricket. She made deals which they can't refuse and they continued their propaganda through social media.
The retired judge submitted a 150 page report to the supreme court which was actually a paraphrased summary of the 1500 page report of PETS. The cricket ignorant judges came up with their judgement with some key points stating that bowlers should not bowl beyond 80kph (which is slower than a spin bowler's pace), fielders should not do any acrobatics such as diving, jumping and skidding and batsman shouldn't hit 6s and 4s. They appointed a panel under another retired judge Godha to make sure these are followed in upcoming matches.

BCCI and cricket fanatics were taken aback by this decision and filed a lot of petitions to remove these regulations but all in vain. BCCI was pushed to impose lots of changes such as dropping pace bowlers and pinch hitters like Dhoni and Yuvraj, recalling Manoj Prabakar, changing 30 yards circle as boundary line etc.

Cricketers who can't control their muscle memory, often dived, jumped, hit boundaries and bowled one or two bouncers even though they restricted themselves to some extent.
Seeing this, Justice Godha and PETS, filed a contempt of court on BCCI, and to ban cricket. The honourable supreme court came up with a historical judgement to ban Cricket in India. They even imprisoned Ravichandran Ashwin for six months as he repeatedly bowled at the speeds of 90kph.
For the cricketing community, that day was registered as a black day, end of an era, end of a culture and end of their dignity.

2013 YEARLY ROUND UP

2013 was a good year for Tamil Cinema as we have seen a lot of Promising new talents have emerged and seen a lot of shocks from the elite class.
I have watched most of the A-grade movies in Theatres and some from Torrents. And the below mentioned movies have stayed inside me for some period unlike the mindless Hi-budget comedy flicks. I hope I tried my best to give an unbiased Count down.

TOP 10 TAMIL MOVIES

1.       HARIDAS
This movie made an impact inside for a long period and no other movies were that impactful to me. Kishore splendidly played the role of a cop and a father of an Autistic boy equally supported by Sneha and that boy. The direction was a huge plus, so was the camera of Rathnavelu (of Endhiran Fame) and the music of Vijay Antony.

2.       AADHALAL KADHAL SEIVEER
Suseenthran’s simple approach to complex issues deserves an Hats-off. And he educates the youth about their present approach to love, life and their parent’s struggle to bring them up. For a film which deals into a lot of emotions there should be good BGMs to support but Yuvan’s music was a huge minus.

3.       SOODHU KAVVUM
The best thing which impressed me is this movie is the black humour. The characters will not force you to laugh like the other movies. They all will be serious as hell but the audience laugh to die, which showed the brilliance of debutant Nalan Kumarasamy. Vijay Sethupathy’s portrayal of a middle aged kednaper kidnaper was top notch.

4.       VISHWAROOPAM
Amid the controversies, this spy action thriller is a clear winner of 2013. The expectation of this movie and the ban in Tamilnadu made me to watch it in Kerala. The amount of hard work put in this flick is visible in every frame.

5.       PANDIYA NADU
Again Suseenthran proved his mettle in the same year with another movie and in another genre. The earlier one was a drama and this was a decent action thriller. Cinematography is worth to mention here. Vishal, Vikranth and the villain did their job well.

6.       VIDIYUM MUNN
It’s a vigilante thriller movie with some striking performances where all the knots were loosened at the end. Being a very low budget movie, the Editing, Direction and the usage of After Effects were superb. Except the lead actress Pooja, all the others did acted perfectly, especially that little girl.

7.       RAJA RANI
Even though the movie is heavily plagiarised and the viewers were put in a situation to sit and watch the expressionless wooden face of Arya for 3 hours, I loved the presentation and kudos,to the debutant Atlee. Hummable songs by G.V, cinematography and sizzling Nayanthara were the plus points.

8.       KALYANA SAMAYAL SADHAM
A feel good urban Rom-Com based on Tam-Bram couples. Prasanna did a role which other actors avoid to do. Lekha and the supporting artistes were brilliant and I enjoyed all the black humour in it. The movie targeted only the A-centre audience so it didn't do well in the Box office.

9.       ONAAIYUM AATUKUTTIYUM
The movie featured here only because of the director’s brilliance and the BGM of Ilayaraja. It didn't create any impact in sense of story or screenplay. Some extremely long shots and the acting of Mysskin are the plus points.

10.   NERAM
This movie also featured here because of the technical brilliance and BGM. I found it as a mix of Tarantino and Guy Ritchie movie which is new to Tamil.

Movies which missed the place in Top Ten.
1.       Madha Yaanai Kootam
2.       6
3.       Maryaan
4.       Endrendrum Punnagai
5.       Varuthapadaadha Vaalibar Sangam
6.       Thanga Meengal – Though it was boring

Top 5 Movies from other Languages.
1.       Lucia (Kannada)
2.       Lunchbox (Hindi)
3.       Shutter (Malayalam)
4.       Amen (Malayalam)
5.       Ship of Theseus (Indian English)
Heard Swamy Ra Ra (Telugu) is good but didn't find a good copy in Torrent.

Movies which were unbearable.
1.       Alex Pandian
2.       Moondru per Moondru Kadhal
3.       Ameerin Adhibagavan
4.       Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga
5.       Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasaya
6.       Naiyyandi
7.       Udhayam NH4
8.       All in All Alaguraja
9.       Settai
10.   YA YA

I found a lot of movies post Kanna Ladu Thinna Aasaya with Powersta’s menacing dances and Santhanam’s foul mouthed dialogues. I found myself an alien in the theatre when watching Laddu, Theeya, Kedi Billa, Settai and lots of similar films, as all the others were LOLing and clapping. I am wondering if poops are called comedy classics then what about the movies of Crazy Mohan, Visu, Mouli and K.Bagyaraj etc??

SHOCKS of 2013
1.       Kadal
Before release it set huge expectations with chartbusters of A.R.Rahman and the Maniratam’s previous magic but didn’t meet anything. Story, Screenplay and lots of minuses made people to walk out of the cinema halls in the middle.
2.       Irandaam Ulagam
I hoped a decent movie from Selvaraghavan as I loved all the songs of the movie. But this big budget ambitious fantasy drama didn't attract me a bit.
3.       Yuvan Shankar Raja
Yuvan had a very bad year and not a single album made a mark. Though Biriyani songs showed some variety, they were also not hummable.
4.       Actor Karthi
Back to Back flops made Karthi to feature in this section. 3 bad movies a year will end any actor’s career but this guy has a family production house so he will keep on giving us bad movies.
5.       Paradesi
Two fictions released at the same time, one is Django Unchained and the other is Paradesi. When the earlier one dealt with liberation of slaves the later portrayed the suppression, suffering. When Django ended with a promising new life for the lead characters and the villains looked like stupids, Paradesi’s lead characters were beaten, treated like animals and the movie ended like they were put into more misery. While most filmmakers decide to go non-linear to be different, Bala is a man who goes linear because he’s bored of being different.

Gravity - An experience

I prefer to watch Hollywood movies in 2D. I felt like I have missed some details in 3D viewing especially the blockbusters which showcase apocalypse, destructions and super human powers. But now-a- days, creators opt for 3D even for stories such as ‘The Great Gatsby’. I felt there’s nothing special in Gatsby to be viewed in 3D so I torrented (sic) and watched it. But if there is a movie to be watched in 3D then it should be Gravity.

Now Trichy has two good theatres which play 3D films, Mina and Vijay Cinemas’ respectively. Mina plays English movies in Tamil and in Vijay we can watch the original version with subtitles just like in multiplexes in Metros. The only problem is Vijay cinemas’ has a relatively small screen than all the other theatres so we need to book our seats nearer to the screen.

Dr Ryan (played by Sandra Bullock) is a rookie and the veteran astronaut Matt (played by George Clooney) is fearless and witty. They are on a routine spacewalk but their Hubble shuttle is destroyed by the debris of an exploded Russian satellite, they are left alone in space with seemingly no way back to earth. Somehow Matt finds Ryan by moving towards her using the propelling jets in his suit. The duo reaches the international Space Station then after more debris strikes them, they are separated altogether and sent spinning out into space. Will either of them make it back to Earth at all? Well you would have to watch the film to find out but it is a story of suspense with some nail biting and goose bump moments.

The visual effects and 2D to 3D conversion is brilliant which shows us the exact reality of space, sunrise in earth seen from space. We feel as if we are in space ourselves as some scenes are filmed from the perspective of the inside of Dr Ryan Stone’s helmet. We can hear her breathing getting laboured as she loses oxygen and spins out of control. We can hear the fear in her voice as she realises she has to get back to earth somehow without any help. This only adds to the overall suspense the film generates. The Director has succeeded in making a superb film with not much of a storyline and only two actors as pivotal characters, which is a stunning. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, two Hollywood legends, both put in great performances in Gravity and Bullock especially must be commended on her gutsy and brave character portrayal.

Although the film had a slightly ‘Hollywood’ ending, I still stood there and bowed down when it ended and came away feeling I had seen a brilliant movie. I rate this movie above than Avatar and Life of Pie in the Visual treats section of Hollywood films.

The cake which ended the World war II...

I wanted to share this right from the day I watched the film 'Salt N' Pepper' (Malayalam) which is gracefully scripted by Ashiq Abu. The lead characters Kalidasan (Lal) & Maya (Swetha Menon) help each other to make a cake named 'Joan's Rainbow' through phone conversations.

Right after watching the movie I googled for Joan's Rainbow, all I got was some cake recipes. I wanted to read the whole story (as the cake story was shown in bits in the movie) but didn't get it from any authentic sites or books. So here it is for you... (as narrated in the movie)

The story is about Joan, a French lady who awaits the return of her husband Albert who is fighting in the second world war, far away from home. Its been told to her that the war might end on that day so she bakes a cake made with milk and delicious strawberry and waits for him. However he does not return that day.
On the second day she baked a pistachio-flavoured cake, only to be disappointed again. She added a layer of the pista cake to the first day's cake with some whipped cream.
Her wait continued into the third day when she made an orange cake but Albert still did not come. She went to bed disappointed that night. Next morning her love arrived bearing a gift of good chocolates for his lady.
They hugged and kissed each other ending their separation for years.

She combined all the cakes and melted the chocolates he brought and poured it over the cake. When they ate the cake together, Albert whispered in Joan's ears that she have ended a world war by her love

P.s - The movie Salt N' Pepper is to be remade in Tamil soon with the name 'Un Samayal Arayil' starred by Prakashraj and Tabu.

Monday, 10:46 pm,

Beep Beep… The sms from him reached her mobile..

Karthik : R u there baby?

Jessie : S dear.

Karthik : I like 2 discuss sumthin’ serious

Jessie :  Karthik, What do u mean?

Karthik : Pls listen to it carefully dear.

Jessie :  What dear? What’s wrong? Anything bad with ur work?

Karthik : No baby, Nothing abt work. Listen to me carefully. I don’t want to hurt u

(Jessie didn’t reply, she thought, "Is he going to breakup with me? Oh god I love him so much!!!")

Karthik : R u there baby???

Jessie :  S, I’m here. What’s so important??

Karthik : I’m not sure how I’ll start this…

Jessie :  Pls tell me quickly. My head feel like bursting. plz

Karthik : I’m leaving…

Jessie : What r u talking about?? I don’t want u to leave me. I love u idiot… L

Karthik : Heyy not like that baby. I mean I’m moving far away. Dubai

Jessie :  Why? U have a job here and all ur family and me are here. And u r happy being here no?

Karthik : No baby, I have to earn something for our future, and I like to keep you happy forever. So I accepted this job at Dubai. Just for one or two years…

Jessie :  J I’m happy for ur care dear. Really touched. But how I can be here without u for 2 years??

Karthik : Heyy, I’ll get leaves in each 3 months and I’ll meet u. Also we have skype, google chat to
stay connected. Cheer up baby… Always u r my sweet heart..

Jessie :  Great dear, I'm happy… Hey My mom is here. If she knows that I’m chatting u. She’ll kill me… Tk cr.. J

Karthik : I don’t know why mom’s so cruel to me. Is being a Hindu a crime??? Why can’t she give her daughter for a man who’s really nice, earning and so caring??? I hate her…

Jessie :  When u become a father and if ur daughter is loving a Christian then u’ll understand her feelings… My sweet hubby, pls have a great sleep.

Karthik : Hey wait… My flight is on Friday and I need to meet u before that…

Jessie went to the bathroom with her phone and called Karthik.

"Wow, That Lady Hitler has allowed u to call Jessie?… I didn’t expected a call from you at this time. Thanks a lot baby... I love you, love you, love you my sweetie…"

In a husky voice, "Stop teasing my mom, She’s sleeping and I came to the bathroom to speak with you. Now listen, I can take a leave from my office on Thursday and I’ll spend the complete day with you. I want you to take me a ride in your bike".

Suddenly Jessie's mom shouted from the bathroom door, “Jessie, Are you speaking with that Hindu idiot again? Oh Jesus, how many times I have told you to stop this Jessie?. What will happen to our society and status? What our relatives will speak about us? Can’t you remember I have a wish when you born that your marriage should happen only at Velankanni Church?”

“Mom, I’m not on phone, I was just singing a song when using the bathroom”

“Ok Ok, Come and sleep soon”

“Please go, I’ll come after drinking some water”

She went to the kitchen and again spoke to him, “Dear, I think my mom found out that I’m speaking with you. Please don’t take anything seriously, Ok, as discussed we’re meeting on Thursday, Bye, Good night Sweetheart…”

“Bye”

Then she got an sms from him,

Karthik : Baby, Can we have a quick register marriage? I’ll take you to Dubai and we start to lead a great life there…

Jessie : What are you saying Karthik? I can’t elope. If there’s a marriage happening to me, that should be in front of my mom. And she should bless us with all her heart. You should convince her.

Karthik : How many times I’ve spoken with her? She’s not even seeing me as a human. For her, I’m a filthy creature which follows Hinduism. How can I convince such a person who doesn’t cares about her daughter’s wish? I think I’ll lose you because of her L Bye…

Then she didn’t get any messages or calls from him even after her continuous apologies.

Thursday 10:00 am,
Jessie came to the spot in the morning and waited for Karthik but he didn’t come. She waited and waited upto the noon and decided to call him. But she found that his mobile was switched off. She was completely disheartened and cried sitting in a corner of the garden and checked the very last sms she got from Karthik.

The sad smiley and Bye in that sms meant something for her.

Jessie went back to home. She cried the whole night without having any food. She switched off her mobile and didn’t speak with anyone.

After two days she got a courier from Karthik,

It said…

“You probably already know that I’m leaving early, I knew this would be better if I wrote a letter explaining the truth about how much I care about you. The truth is that I never care about you, I never love you, I hate you so much, you are my bitch and don’t you ever forget that. I never wanted to talk to you, and be around you. You really have no clue how much I hate you. Now that I’m leaving I thought you should know that I hate you, bitch. You never did the right thing, and you are never in my heart. I didn’t think I could hate someone as much as I hate you. And I never want to see you, for the rest of my life, I will never miss kissing you like before, I never want to cuddle up, how we used to. I will not miss you and that’s a promise. You never had my love, and I want you to remember that. Bitch, you keep this because this will help you to understand that how much I hate when you get any memories about me again.
I hate you so much. I will not talk to you soon bitch… Goodbye.”

Jessie started to cry, she threw that letter in the garbage and cried for hours.

Days passed, She was sad, depressed and she felt so lonely, never went to the office…
Then she finally switched on her mobile and found that she got a very long sms from Karthik on Wednesday evening which she didn’t noticed at all.

It said…

Karthik : Really sorry dear, I can’t make it on Thursday because my flight is preponed by the employers to tomorrow morning. And I’ll be in flight so my phone will be switched off. I thought of sending a letter to you written by my hand so that whenever you miss me you can read the letter and have a little smile.

I knew your Mom might read and tear it , So I switched some words in that letter…
Hate = Love,  Never = Always,  Bitch = Sweetheart,  Will not = Will

Hope you understand this, I love you with all my heart and I’ll find out a way to convince your mom. All l need is some time. I swear that will definitely convince her. Take care baby…

Jessie was shocked after reading that letter and said to herself, “ Oh my God!... Karthik loves me!! He has sent this sms the day before his early departure. How I missed this sms, I can’t believe how stupid I am!!”

She searched for that Karthik’s letter and again read it after replacing those words, now with a big smile…

Jessie and Karthik’s love has become so strong after this small break and it cannot be broken again by any forces hereafter…

If both of your love is strong, then the love itself will unite you…

Born on the 13th…

Born on the 13th

Triskaidekaphobia is an abnormal fear of the number 13

Paraskevidekatriaphobia is the fear of Friday the 13th.

The number 13 is synonymous with bad luck. It's considered unlucky to have 13 guests at a dinner party, many cities do not have a 13th Street or a 13th Avenue, architects frequently omit a 13th floor from their plans, many hotels do not have a room number 13 and most people avoid to get married or to buy a house on a day marked by this dreaded number. Especially some superstitious people of Europe even avoid driving on Friday the 13th.

Why this number is the most dreaded one all over the world?

No one seems to know exactly why this came to be so, but there are many possible explanations. It had started from the primitive stages of life. Primitive man had only 10 fingers and 2 feet to represent units, so he could not count higher than 12. For him what lay beyond that (i.e. 13) was a mystery and there man started to believe that 13 is an unlucky number.

At the time of Alexander the Great, 12 Gods were known, one for each month. Our guy Alexander wanted to be the thirteenth God and erected a statue next to the 12th God in his capital. Soon after the statue is opened for public viewing he died! After that the Governor ordered to remove the statue.

There were 13 members present at the Last Supper and we know one of the dinner guest betrayed Jesus Christ, because of Judas’s act Jesus got crucified. So people started to avoid 13 Guests for a party.

Apollo 13 was the only unsuccessful mission by the United States of America's NASA program to land a mission on the moon, although fortunately all of the craft's crew returned to Earth safely.
Hindus follow the thirteenth day from death as a memorial feast in our country.

LOVE BEING LOVED...

What is the one emotion that has mystified everyone?
What is the one emotion that has started as many wars as it has ended?
What emotion has had more plays, songs, and stories written about it than anything else?

Love, that one emotion that makes enemies into friends and friends into enemies. So many legends surround this emotion, from the goddess Athena and Helen of Troy to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to our own Laila and Majnu.

Love comes in so many different levels, that it doesn't appear to be the same emotion at all, but it is. There is so much to love, that it will be hard to put into this simple essay. It can tear people apart and make us do irrational things to bringing together entire nations. What can this emotion not do? It's hard to tell, but there is a lot it can.

This emotion, bring tears to our eyes when something happens to our family members, friends, and pets. When we feel love ripped from us, as in death or being spurned by another, we do things we wouldn't normally do, such as go on violent rampages, or mourn to the extent that our loved ones have to watch us constantly to make sure we don't try any stupid decisions. Some can move on, always remembering the lost loved one after a while, but others cannot let go. These are the ones that need our love and support the most.

There are so many levels to love, that I can only express a few of them here. These are the ones we see most in life. Friendship starts this list off. Yes, it doesn't seem like it, but we do feel love towards our friends, this is what helps us get along so well, and why we miss them when we don't see our friends for a long time. It's also why we hold certain friends over others no matter what happens. Sometimes, the bond between friends deepens to the point where a stronger bond of love is made, making them family.

Another level of love, are for our siblings and other family members. Even though we do things to our family members, and sometimes we don't like some of our family, that bond is still there. It's this family bond level of love that brought about the phrase, blood is thicker than water. We will do things for our brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, and children before we would even consider doing them for anyone else. Many wars have been started because of this family level, brother avenging brother or father, father protecting his wife and children, or even vice versa. This simple family bond can even extend to include our pets, amazingly enough, and that is a good thing.

A third level to love, is the bond that brings man and woman together. This level is among THE STRONGEST of them all. To keep this level to our comfort we should believe that love is a combination of CARE, COMMITMENT, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, TRUST and of course ROMANCE.  It is this level of love that has brought together kingdoms into nations in the past, and ended many great wars. It's is also for the love of a woman that has started a few of our well-known wars, like the Trojan Wars of ancient times. It's brought together families that have argued for years and years, such as in the Shakespearean play, Romeo and Juliet. Even though the two mentioned killed themselves in the end, it still brought their families together.

The last mentionable level of love is that bond between a mother and her children. There is no stronger, nor will there ever be. This bond starts from the very first tiny fluttering of movement and never ends, even after death of the child. A mother protects her children in the name of love, and directs them through life using it as the example to follow. Well, at least it should be. It's because of her children a mother will work at a job she hates, just to make sure they have everything they could ever want or need.

The phrase, love makes the world go round is very true. It's is our driving force, for what ever reason it may be. Poems, plays, and legends can only briefly touch the true meaning of love. We can only feel what that meaning is, and express it in ways only we can understand towards another. The true question we should be asking is not, what is life, but what is love.

What is love? I don't know, but I'll do what I can to express it to my girl, my family and friends, and to every single pet I have or ever will own in the best possible way that I can.
